SHUR-LINE & Shannon Kaye Consumer Tips:
“Painting 101: How to Properly Paint a Room”
With the following tips and techniques, changing the look and feel of any room can be an easy and satisfying weekend project.
• Use the right tools and take care of them! – Invest in quality brushes and rollers, such as those by SHUR-LINE with Teflon® Surface Protector. The Teflon surface protector coating allows you to paint more thoroughly with less effort, and the tools rinse off easily for faster cleaning. When selecting a nap roller, get a thick nap for heavily textured walls and thin nap for smoother surfaces. For brushes, a 2” angle brush makes painting the edges and corners of your walls less tedious. Additionally, for woodwork, use a 2” square brush, which also allows you to follow the lines of your woodwork with nice, straight strokes.
• Prepare the room – Save yourself time later by carefully preparing your room in advance. Move everything to the center of the room and drape an old sheet or drop cloth over the top. Unplug any unnecessary devices and carefully remove all the switch and outlet plates. The SHUR-LINE Premium Multi-Tool has a screwdriver with various bits and a scraping edge for lifting any flaking or loose paint. Take down artwork, shelves, and anything else that might interfere with a fresh new coat of paint. Fill unnecessary holes and prime the patches before painting. Finally, sweep away cobwebs and wipe down the baseboards and tops of the windows and doors.
• Time to paint! – To make edging easier and less messy, try using Edge Like a Pro™ from SHUR-LINE for trim work against the floor and ceiling. Next, use a roller to fill in the walls. Make sure to paint very close to the trim and corners, rolling over the 3” strip of paint you just painted. Use mini rollers for small tricky areas and keep a damp cloth handy for small clean ups as you go. Remember to keep the room well ventilated during painting and for at least several hours afterwards.
• Clean up – Pour the extra paint back into the can. Drape an old cloth over the can and gently tap the rim with a hammer to reseal it. The cloth keeps paint from splattering and a tightly sealed can will keep paint fresh for future touch ups. All of your SHUR-LINE products with Teflon® Surface Protector are designed to rinse easily, so clean up is a snap. Wait several hours before replacing your furnishings to avoid and unplanned color changes! Finally, don’t forget to reinstall switch and outlet plates.
