INSPIRATION

Shannon Kaye Tips & Tricks

SHUR-LINE & Shannon Kaye Consumer Tips:
“Tips on How to Select the Perfect Wall Color”

A fresh coat of paint updates a room dramatically, but choosing the right shade can be overwhelming.  Here are some tips to help you choose the paint color that is right for you.

• Tip 1 – The color on a paint chip is generally much more intense when spread across a large surface. Dark colors on a chip will look darker on a wall, light colors will look lighter, and so on. Match your inspiration color as closely as possible to a paint chip color. Then look towards lighter or earthier versions of that color for a sophisticated, spot on color choice. For darker shades, try selecting a color that is 2-3 shades lighter. For light colors look for something a bit darker or earthier to keep the color looking “alive.”

Bright, clear colors tend to reflect lots of light, often creating a glowing effect. To avoid this, look for colors that are a bit earthy or gray. If you want blue, look for shades that have gray or silver hint to them. If you prefer green, seek out olive or brown tones.

• Tip 2 – To make sure you achieve the perfect color the first time, brush samples of a few color choices on each wall. Look at them at several times throughout the day to see how you like each choice as the light changes. Also, look at your sample patches from adjacent rooms to see how they work with the colors in the rest of your house. Many paint companies sell sample sizes of their color collections so you can test several shades before committing. To avoid confusion and frustration, limit your sample choices to 3 or 4 possibilities.

• Tip 3 – A tinted primer will create the color you’ll love with minimum effort. If making an extreme color change such as going from red to white or vice versa, using a good primer can help cut down on the time and cost by reducing the coats of paint you will need. Red paint requires a gray primer to achieve the truest hue. For other bright or intense colors, have your white primer tinted up to 40 percent of the strength of your color choice. Most paint and hardware stores will do this at no extra charge.

To help cut down on painting time, use SHUR-LINE rollers and trays with Teflon® coating, which releases the paint to your walls more easily and allows you to paint faster with less paint. These tools also rinse quickly, so clean up is a breeze.

• Tip 4 – Colors have the power to evoke emotions and memories. Cool colors, such as lavender and blue, can feel calming or cold depending on the environment and the people experiencing these shades.  Warm colors, such as orange or red, can be energetic or agitating. Choose colors that make you feel comfortable, and mix warm and cool tones for a more balanced effect.
